Building Brains and Supporting Literacy

Friday Brain Building Club has always been about more than activities.

When I created FBBC, I wanted to make it easier for families to give children regular opportunities to think, read, reason and problem-solve away from a screen. But I also wanted the business, as it grew, to help children beyond the families who subscribe.

That's why I'm incredibly proud that Friday Brain Building Club supports the National Literacy Trust through its In Aid Of programme.

Why literacy matters to FBBC

I spent more than 15 years working in education before launching Friday Brain Building Club, and one thing has remained constant throughout that time: literacy opens doors.

Being able to read confidently, understand language, develop vocabulary and communicate ideas doesn't only matter in English lessons. These skills help children access learning across the curriculum and build the knowledge and confidence they need as they grow.

It's also why literacy runs throughout every FBBC sheet.

Our activities mix literacy with numeracy, verbal reasoning, logic and problem-solving. Children might encounter a new Word of the Week, solve a crossword or riddle, spot relationships between words, crack a code or use language to reason their way through a problem.

The activities change, but the principle remains the same: knowledge and confidence are built gradually, through lots of small opportunities to think and learn.

Supporting the National Literacy Trust

The National Literacy Trust works to improve literacy across the UK, particularly in communities where low literacy is having the greatest impact.

That mission feels very closely aligned with what I want FBBC to stand for.

Through our support for the National Literacy Trust, the growth of Friday Brain Building Club can contribute to something bigger: helping more children develop the literacy skills they need to thrive.

Alongside this, I'm committed to getting FBBC sheets directly into the hands of more children for free. We're already finding ways to distribute complimentary activity sheets within our local community, including through schools and other organisations, and I want that side of FBBC to grow alongside our subscriber community.

Growing with purpose

FBBC is still a very young business, but I think the early days are exactly when you decide what kind of business you want to build.

For me, that means keeping our weekly subscription affordable, making learning genuinely enjoyable and ensuring that, as FBBC grows, its impact grows too.

Our subscribers are a really important part of making that possible. Every family that joins helps us build a sustainable business that can reach more children — both through our weekly subscription and through our wider work to support children's learning and literacy.

So when your child sits down on a Friday to tackle a Number Tower, discover a new word or deliberate over a particularly tricky piece of reasoning, they're part of something a little bigger too.

And I'm incredibly proud of that.
